Ricing
I shot my mouth off again (what a surprise). I said throughout the summer that we were going to harvest 200 lbs. of wild rice this year. (We had been averaging about 100 for each of the last two years.) And Ann says, that when she was younger, she got 200 lbs. in a day.
The beginning of the season is when the rice birds arrive to eat the rice and the harrier hawks arrive to eat the rice birds.
Nonetheless, with the late spring and cool summer, we could see no rice birds and it looked as though the rice was never going to ripen. Today, September 10, we did an exploratory run . . .
. . .and . . .
we came home with 57 1/2 pounds in about 3 hours.
While it's too early to get out those wild rice recipes, I'm feeling more confident (about the rice and John Kerry).
